The art of Chiyono : oil painting and giclee reproductions
Born in the Goto Islands, in the Nagasaki prefecture, she now resides in Tokyo.
The island where she lived until she was 18, is a part of the UNESCO heritage since 2018. The many Catholic churches built there, unique in Japan, are known has the « Hidden Christian Sites of Nagasaki ».
It is also known as the « Island of prayers » thanks to this cultural and religious heritage.
Her creativity stems from the memories of her childhood in this universe.
From her village, one can enjoy the wonderful view and smell of the emerald-coloured sea, while in the evening, the sunset bathes the bell towers in a warm and incredible light.
The bell melody of the local traditional « Chankoko » dance, as well as the sound and smell of fireworks during the Bon festival, remind us of the Chinese New Year atmosphere.
The unique ambience of this island, as well as her family environment, have a strong influence on Chiyono’s work.
Since she was a child, has been drawing on every material she could find.
After high school, she wanted to study fine arts, but could not because of family issues. So she started practising on her own during her spare time.
Chiyono works with multiple plastic techniques, the only constant element being her creativity. She oftens draws winged medieval figures, which seem like a reflection of her desire to escape her familiar world and fly to unknown destinations.
Her characters cry, smile and embrace each other.
The thin and delicate lines she draws are impressive, but she also uses a more powerful touchto express a dramatic anger, such as her use of Japanese syllabary in the backgrounds, in order to put an emphasis on strong emotions. These particular elements illustrate a body of work centered around the human being.
Since 2010, the artist is creating human-shaped puzzle pieces, all different in shape and size. This represents the complexity of human relations in our society, which is emphasized by the use of a vivid and diverse colour scheme.
Chiyono now continues this puzzle series, centered on the theme of human bonding.
